build a solar panel system

I live on the fourth floor of an apartment building. Our building is situated inside a village with lots of houses. From my balcony, I can see the rooftops of at least a dozen or so houses. I see a lot of homes with solar panel on their roofs and I often wonder how much would it cost to have one installed in your home? Although most of the solar panels I see are probably pre fabricated, I also wonder how much it would cost to build a solar panel system of your own.
I searched the internet and I was surprised to learn that there are actually Do-it-yourself solar panel kits. These kits can be bought in hardware stores and online. The do-it-yourself solar panel systems come in various shapes, sizes and materials. I am certainly no handy man so I do not trust myself with any of these things. However, I do believe that with the right tools, the correct skills and some expert hands, I will be able to build a solar panel system of my own someday.
