Thanks to the advances in technology, wind power can now be converted into a useful form of energy. As of May 2009, eighty countries around the world have been reported to be using wind energy on a commercial basis. There are now large-scale wind farms connected to the electric power transmission network. Smaller facilities are also utilized to provide electricity in isolated locations.
Wind energy as a power source is a great alternative to burning fossil fuels. Wind is clean, renewable, abundant and produces no greenhouse gas emissions. Compared to the environmental effects of traditional energy sources, those generated by wind power are relatively minor. The energy used to manufacture and transport materials used in building a wind power plant is equal to the new energy produced by the plant within just a few months of operation.
