Why will you want to build your own wind generator? Maybe you think that it will save you some dollars by producing your own energy. Another reason could be that you will be assured of a supply of energy even when there is a blackout. This may be true if there is a consistent presence of wind in your location. The thing is with a little help from experienced people, you can follow a plan and learn how to build a wind generator and produce wind energy for personal consumption. A properly built wind generator will serve you for years to come. There are two main designs for wind turbines currently in use in many countries. The horizontal axis and the vertical axis wind turbines. Of the two, the horizontal axis wind turbine is more widely used and studied.

A horizontal axis wind turbine looks like a plane propeller and employs the same principle. It is composed of the blades that harness the wind, a gear box that contains the mechanical parts, and a generator that transforms the mechanical energy to electrical energy. There are also parts that aim to shut off the machine when conditions are not ideal and a tower that raises it well above the ground to expose the blades to higher wind speed.
