The horizontal axis and the vertical axis wind turbines. Of the two, the horizontal axis wind turbine is more widely used and studied.
A horizontal axis wind turbine looks like a plane propeller and employs the same principle. It is composed of the blades that harness the wind, a gear box that contains the mechanical parts, and a generator that transforms the mechanical energy to electrical energy. There are also parts that aim to shut off the machine when conditions are not ideal and a tower that raises it well above the ground to expose the blades to higher wind speed.
