Plants vary in their light requirements. Some will need full sun to be healthy and produce well. Others are survivors that can get by with diffused sunlight. Hydroponically grown vegetables need at least 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight. Serious hobbyists will go to the extent of setting up special plant-growth lamps to provide light supply in locations where sunlight is not sufficient. These fixtures are, however, very expensive and not feasible for commercial operation.

Plant grow lights are electric lamps designed to promote plant growth by emitting an electromagnetic spectrum that will induce photosynthesis. These are usually used in indoor plants and on a limited scale. The emitted light spectrum is similar to that from the sun, allowing indoor growth with outdoor conditions. Different light spectra are used for the different stages of plant growth. The initial vegetative stage requires blue spectrum of light, whereas the later “flowering” stage is usually done with red-orange spectra.
