A garden can be a calming oasis in the city that you can easily visit and return to repeatedly. If you want to create one or are planning to transform your current patch into something more restful and inspiring, try putting your ideas onto pen and paper first. A garden diagram will give you a better picture of what you envision your backyard or lawn to be. When you consult a feng shui expert or landscape artist about it, he or she will likewise have a clearer understanding of your preferences.

A good start would be to use a compass to know where north, south, east and west are in relation to your garden. If you have a big area, select where you’d like your creative personal space to be. This corner or alcove is a spot where you can reflect, sit quietly and connect with nature and yourself. You also have to decide where your garden will face. According to the Chinese, who fervently practice feng shui to this day, a patch facing south is loaded with energy. Nearly all gardens face the direction in which it is entered. In your sketch, plot out too your vegetable garden design. You could draw them in rows vertically or horizontally. Similarly, mark sites for other essentials and trappings such as pots, ponds, flower beds, benches, stone paths, fencing, and fountains. A well-planned and thought out garden brings substantially more rewards and gratification than a rushed, messy one.
