rustic birdhouses

Birdhouse designs vary not so much for aesthetic reasons. They are also planned for the specific kind of bird that we want to come. Birds will not know the difference in design of one birdhouse to another. But we know that they prefer houses that resemble their natural nesting places. That is why we see a lot of rustic birdhouses. This is the kind that birds recognize as their natural habitat.

Some bird species will not be attracted to enclosed birdhouses. The Barn Swallow and Mourning Dove, for example, prefer the use of nesting shelves. All that is needed is a roof, back, bottom and narrow sides. Others are platform nesters. Platforms are open on all four sides and are usually placed in shrubs. This is a good alternative for birds that prefer to have their nest in a somewhat similar environment when natural nesting sites are not available.
