There are a wide variety of ready-made bird baths and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
~Concrete baths are popular because they have the feel of stone and they fit in most landscape settings. They also stay put even where there are strong winds. Birds like these types of baths due to their rough surface, stability and wide, gently sloping bowls.~Plastic baths place on top of iron-rod or wood supports are lightweight and easy to move. They are also easy to clean. However, the bowls often are slippery and have steep sides. Plastic can also crack when the water freezes inside.~Ceramic baths are ornamental but when glazed, they can be extremely slippery for the birds.~Hanging bird baths can be placed almost anywhere. They are convenient to locate than a bird bath that rests on the ground. Birds are also safer here from predators like cats. However, water spills easily from them especially when it’s windy.
